Rising Up Challenges of COVID-19 in Bintan, a small Indonesian island

The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic was reported to have spread to Indonesia on 2 March 2020, when a dance instructor and her mother were infected.

The impact of a global pandemic on the poorest among us is evident.

Only one day without work means no food on the table. One day without income means that all family including children are hungry. A few more days without income brings stress and anger. Another week without seeing your family relatives and with no friends around can be described as a complete heart-breaking situation.
Where to go and how to find a solution?

Beyond immediate health concerns during COVID-19, the long-term impacts are expected on food systems including food security and nutrition.

The poorest and most vulnerable populations have fewer resources to cope with the loss of jobs and incomes, the increase of food prices and the instability of food availability, and therefore have less ability to adapt to the crisis.

The worsening of the food security situation can also have negative impact on the progression of the pandemic by weakening immune systems. In any scenario, the most affected will be the poorest and most vulnerable segments of the population.

We, Sinar Cahaya Solusi Indonesia do not stop working during this difficult time of the Covid19. We continue to implement our efforts and our mission to help the locals in Bintan. Supporting them means to alleviate their suffering during this difficult time. With the basic income they earn from Sinar, they are able to provide food and nurture their family well-being. Our mission does matter to the local women.

We collaborate with the local small farmers by buying their harvest products directly from them. Their products are not wasted, and they have income. That in its own supports the farmer’s economy during pandemic time.

Building trust with the local communities, we are structuring a team for performance and engagement. We continue to:

  1. provide jobs to women
  2. distribute available stock of dry bananas and papaya to mothers and children
  3. build new stock of dry bananas for upcoming Ramadan and further distribution
  4. teach online local communities of healthy and highly nutritious food
